J-Lo…NO!…Making Fun Of "We Are The World" 2?…YES!…

Well, you may have seen an earlier blog about how I was very disappointed with the new version of “We Are The World”…with the Olympics winding down, SNL returned last night, and I was a little surprised they went after this subject first, since there was a boat load of material from this week’s Health Care Reform Summit…I confess, if a skit about the HCR Summit did air, I may have missed it, since I didn’t watch the entire show…and I still stick by my position on Jennifer Lopez no longer being valid…her musical performances were on par or below American Idol this past week…OUCH!
However, you’ll see J-Lo impersonating Rihanna and it’s funny…as is Jenny Slate as Lady GaGa…my only complaint, Jason Sudekis needs to work on his Glambert, as does Abby Elliott with Melissa Etheridge….LOL!…here it is:

American Idol..Fight or Flight?

Well, I was not satisfied with most of the first cuts last night on Idol…I’m still not caring much about the guys…Tyler Grady was supposedly a surprise, but not to me…he was a one-trick pony with his 70’s crap and I hope he has a good life…Joe Munoz, again, not surprised, he had as much personality as a gnat and he had no star quality…that’s a keyword this season…STAR…and so far, there are no real stars…
On the ladies’ cuts…I was mortified to learn both Katie Stevens and Lacey Brown (who I learned has ties to Owensboro KY) survived week one…HOW???…Janell Wheeler being cut was the biggest surprise to me…she was good looking and she had a decent voice, enough to get her past week one…as for Ashley Rodiguez, she turned out to be the biggest disappointment of week one…here’s what I don’t understand, they coined her as a possible “diva” this season…huh?!?…is it just because she took on Leona Lewis’ “Happy”?…I’m sorry, but I didn’t see a diva at all, I saw someone, who in the beginning, could sing, but couldn’t handle the live show…
Thus I’m left to ponder my continuing support for this show…I already know it’s going to be a rough one..and with Simon leaving at the end of the season, I predict the show will not last beyond, maybe, one more season…the talent this year is very scarce, mostly because we’ve all seen the same type of singers muddle through the competition…yes, Crystal Bowersox (did she not look so out of place in the group song last night???) is fresh and is original, but how long will she last?…if the mindset of America has changed in terms of just choosing a bonafide pop star, then she has a great chance of going far…and I really want a girl to win this season, but someone, besides Bowersox, has to make it more competitive…and again, so far, I’m over the guys…boring!
Even Ellen will have a tough time, but I still love her!

American Idol Top 12 Ladies: A Crap Shoot!

Okay, so crap shoot is not the best way to describe last night, but come on!…the ladies need to pick it up, however, the top 12 this year will be comprised of 6 guys and 6 girls…so far?…I don’t see 6 strong girls…in fact, I see only 2, maybe 3…song choices last night were not too good…the worst?…Lacey Brown with the Dixie Chicks’ version of “Landslide”…so bad, so boring…and this is a girl who almost made the top 24 last year…instead, fruitcake Megan Joy made it, and we all know how that turned out…OMG!…I see that burden as a curse…I predict she’s definitely in the bottom Thursday…who else will be in the bottom?…for sure, Katie Stevens, who was so timid and so old sounding on Michael Buble’s “Feeling Good”…she has no star quality or power to her voice…I hate to say this but either Haeley Vaughn or Janell Wheeler may be visiting the bottom for the first time tomorrow night…Vaughn was just annoying and obnoxious in her rendition of The Beatles, “I Wanna Hold Your Hand”…Simon pointed out she is not defining herself as she did when she walked in to audition for Hollywood…she originally intended to go country, but she’s already lost her way…I’m not a fan of Janell Wheeler’s voice…granted, all of the ladies last night were nervous in their first live show, but Wheeler just couldn’t work completely through “What About Love”…she annoys the hell out of me too…
Okay, I move on to who impressed me…first, I disagree with the panel on Paige Miles, she’s okay…Simon deemed her “..the best singer in the competition…”, not sure about that…but I see a lot of potential in her and Ashley Rodriguez…I was also impressed with someone I didn’t expect to be…Katelyn Epperly really made The Beatles’ “Oh Darlin'” her own, but her lipstick blinded me!…Lilly Scott and Didi Benami are this year’s Megan Joys, but they are a billion times better…they just have to find their niche’…Siobhan Magnus was okay, I wasn’t expecting her to impress…she has that musical theater quality and it will not pull her through every week….
And in the end, I still think Crystal Bowersox is the best lady in the competition…yes, she’s a coffeehouse performer and she really doesn’t belong on Idol, but she’s fresh and she will stand out…I just hope we don’t see her guitar and her harmonica every single week…
Props to Ellen on her first live show!…I just hope she doesn’t become emotional when the cuts begin…

Riding The Snake To Gold!…Roses For Weir!

Congratulations to American Evan Lysacek on taking the gold in Men’s Figure Skating…you heard this a billion times last night, but Lysaceck is the first American to capture that gold since Brian Boitano, in Calgary, in 1988…I’m happy with the result…in the end Yevgeny Plushenko just couldn’t pull through…his jumps were awkward looking and his choreography was silly and cheesy…I guess in the end, he was satisfied with silver, but I love he was taken down a few pegs…many skaters went for the quad jumps last night, and I don’t think any really succeeded…Johnny Weir had one and had practiced one, but he did not go with the quad in his free skate…a clean program can be acheived with triple axles, but those must be flawless…Plushenko executed his quad, but he finished all of his jumping elements 2 minutes into his program…he was basically left with spins and some of the worst dancing I’ve ever seen…Japanese skater, Nobunari Oda, experienced his own Tonya Harding moment, when one of his skates became unlaced, the commentators thought he had injured himself, but no, just a bad skate…he was allowed to finish his routine…Oda finished 7th, just behind you know who:
For all of the hype, Johnny Weir delivered…no, he didn’t deliver another medal to the Americans, but he skated the best he could…his free skate only saw one bobble on a spin, the rest was artistry…if the judges were negatively influenced by Weir’s hype, it definitely showed in Weir’s low marks…I mean, what makes one skater technically better than the next? (I think I asked that in my last blog)…it’s just sad, but if Johnny Weir is okay with finishing 6th at maybe his last Olympics, more power to him…at least he went out in style…with roses!
I probably won’t recap the women’s figure skating….but I will be watching it…eh.

It’s All About The Attitude!

So, Johnny’s big Vancouver Olympic debut was last night…and well?…it was fabulous!…NBC commentator and gold medalist Scott Hamilton had the best quote: “it’s the attitude…I’m here to sell!”…Weir skated well, but only managed a 5th place finish going into tomorrow night’s free skate…program wise, Weir was on par with last night’s 1st place skater, Yevgeny Plushenko
And yes, Plushenko was nearly flawless…he is the reigning Olympic champion…I really have no idea what makes a skater technically better than the next…Plushenko broke into the 50s on his technical score, whereas Weir only managed a 42.9…er?…is it the spins, the footwork…the attitude????…I just think Plushenko is so well-loved, Johnny doesn’t really have a shot at a medal, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves…in the event Weir does not medal, I hope Evan Lysacek does…
Why?…he’s American, he has a good comeback story…he finished 10th after the short program in Torino four years ago, but came back to finish just off the podium (4th) after the free skate…he has a different attitude than Weir, more fire than flash…he has the best chance at gold…he was very emotional after his 2nd place finish last night…Weir will have to skate flawlessly to have a chance…but I’m afraid it will be a shootout between Plushenko and Lysacek…and never underestimate the Japanese skaters who finished 3rd and 4th respectively…I’m terrible with names…just watch tomorrow night!

I Know It’s Wrong To Criticize When It’s For Charity, BUT!

The new “We Are the World”????…Oh, not good…I understand it’s for those suffering and recovering in Haiti, but some classics should be left alone…here it is…
I don’t object at all to some of the artists involved…Pink and Jennifer Hudson turned it out…and of course Celine!!!!…however, you have the artists, Justin Bieber, who are just out of place…I’m talking to you Tony Bennett, Miley, Lil’ Wayne!…yeah, why auto tune????…is that what the world has come to?…oh yeah, I forgot to throw props to Babs-Barbra Streisand…and I’m a little pissed not more country artists were featured…where was Taylor Swift’s solo?…Jennifer Nettles was the only country singer, well, if you count Miley (I DON’T!) that did get a solo…and wouldn’t you know, some random actors showed up, like Oscar nominee Jeff Bridges, who sings very well…and…Vince Vaughn…we’ll call him this version’s Dan Akyroyd…and in a moment of eerie tracking, we hear the late Michael Jackson on a chorus and when he sings “when you’re down and out and there seems no hope at all”…it’s the best part of the song…God bless Lionel Richie and Quincy Jones for making this happen, again…but next time, leave out the auto tune…

MTV is NO longer "Music Television"…really?!?!

Well, not suprisingly, stories are flooding the web today with the news MTV has eliminated “Music Television” from its logos and its subsequent non-music programming…now, I’m no Einstein, but I, along with the rest of world, has noticed MTV has NOT played a lot of music videos over the past 10 years…the network has delegated the responsibility to its “sister” channels, MTV2, MTVJAMS, and so forth, however, you’ll still find a big lack of continuous music programming…you’ll see shows that have also been pushed onto the other channels or reruns of shows that no longer show up on MTV…
I guess I’m gulity of loving some of the non-music shows, like The Real World, which has turned into a giantic monster with no plans of slowing down…I love True Life…after that?…there’s not much I want to watch on MTV…oh yeah, I still watch the VMAs, but that’s where my interest ends…one can argue MTV is catering to the young folks who I guess could be my kids?!?…I’m sorry, but Teen Mom, 16 and Pregnant???…that’s great TV and even better role models for the kids to see…and don’t even get me started on his whore and her pack of wanna-be whores:
I will NEVER watch 5 seconds of Jersey Shore!….and do you blame me?…yeah, I guess it can be your guilty pleasure, but really? really?…again, terrific role models…
MTV has it right with Jersey Shore, but it’s not right with me and my other Gen X-ers who just want to see some friggin’ videos!!!…Personally, I find solace in another MTV Networks partner, VH1 Classic…find it or if you don’t have it, request it!!!!…no, DEMAND IT!…
