Joss Gives Back!..and there’s more!

Yes, Joss Stone and Jeff Beck WERE the Idol Gives Back show…yes, yes, I loved Annie Lennox…I’m just bummed that damn volcano ash kept her from being on live…I did not see the Black Eyed Peas, but I heard good things and bad things…they are the group of the moment, so it was fitting to have them open the show…I guess I shouldn’t say “of the moment” but I digres…this week’s mentor, Alicia Keys, sounded a little rough, but she rocks, damn, I love to hear her talk, she’s so smoove…okay, I loved-loved-loved Joss Stone and Jeff Beck’s performance of “I Put a Spell on You”…oh yeah…that was true artistry right there folks!…if say, Crystal and Siobhan want to look at possibly what their future careers can be, Stone provided an excellent example…Elton John was great, Carrie Underwood was okay, the Mary J. Blige all-star group was good, but didn’t totally rock me…I think the whole fake phonebank joke segment with Russell Brand and Jonah Hill was okay…I mean Slash!…hello?!?…Wanda Sykes was the funniest of the night…her joke about telling Big Mike to go home was hilarious…season 7 winner David Cook appeared but did not perform, boo to the producers on a missed opportunity…Seacrest was Seacrest…I really hope he goes along with Simon at the end of the season, he’s exhausting to watch anymore…
If you think Gleeks were upset Wednesday night…Idoloonies may be upset about last night..the broadcast ran oh, 20-25 minutes long…but I’m sure by now, you know Tim Urban or “Turban” finally bit the dust on his Idol run…he was cheesy, but he had gotten a lot better in the past few weeks…in fact, I participated in the LA Times’ Idol Tracker chat yesterday and promininent critic Ann Powers said she feared Tim might WIN?!?!?…I guess she’s eating her words today…and of course, leave it up to the producers to force the “Big Mike in the bottom 3” issue yet again…I’m tired of it, really tired of it…Casey James was sent to safety, leaving Big Mike and Tim waiting….there’s just too much drama in the elinination episodes this year…at this point, with the exception of Crystal, who the hell has a chance of winning????…I know I’m not the only one who feels this way…I’m losing faith in Siobhan, although I’m still confident she can pick it back up…however, next week, Shania Twain will be the mentor and the Idols will choose from HER library…yes, it’s mostly country, but Twain cashed in on the whole country-pop crossover niche way before Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood…but I have no idea who this niche will favor out of the 6 contestants remaining…man, it sucks Katie Stevens couldn’t stick around long enough for Shania week, since the judges tried to force her into a country direction…oh well…
So here’s what we’ve learned…always set your DVRs to record at least 20 minutes longer than scheduled, the Idols are STILL lipsynching the group numbers, and I’m over this season…just kidding on that last one, but really…

My Top 10 Songs of 2009…

Well, here we are, another year is almost in the books…wait, the first decade of the new millenium is almost in the books???…it’s crazy, but so is music…let’s get started….
1. Lady GaGa–Throw a dart!!!…4, soon to be 5, #1 hits, many dramatical performances and appearances (FYI-she’s going to be on a new episode of Bravo’s Launch My Line Jan. 6; I don’t watch the show, but I will just this once) anyway, “Poker Face” was GaGa’s biggest hit of ’09…and I would agree, but I’m predicting “Bad Romance” could be even bigger!…oh, and she’s also in the midst of her first headlining tour: The Monster Ball…I love her!…is she the new Madonna?….we’ll see…
2. Beyonce’–Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)…you know, I think this was last year’s number 2…and it makes my list again simply because it’s one of the best tracks ever produced…and yes, Kanye was right, it’s one of the best videos of all time…also, this time last year, Single Ladies was still relatively new to the charts…on the fringe…I was also impressed by Halo and Diva…not to mention her mash-up of If I Were a Boy with Alanis Morrisette’s You Oughta Know on her I Am…tour…she heads into the Grammys with 10 nominations…think she’ll win one???…
3. Kings of Leon–Use Somebody…yes, the men are rare on this year’s list…I’m still a little disappointed in Kings of Leon…they started out as this little indie band from Nashville…Pentecostal brothers and a cousin…and they’ve always had great tunes…however, in 2009, something changed…this song broke through to the mainstream and the band seemed to have never looked back…when I think of this year, this is definitely one track that pops into my head…
4. Black Eyed Peas–I Gotta Feeling…oh yes…the Peas dominated the charts this year…and I think their music is sounding more pop than hip-hop these days, which makes for many happy fans and listeners…Fergie helps a lot too….damn girl!
5. Katy Perry–Waking Up in Vegas…I know you think Hot N Cold should be on here instead…I give it props, but I liked Vegas better…again, it had more mainstream appeal…and it erased all my hatred of Perry for that little I Kissed a Girl song…I forgive, but I don’t forget…when The Hangover is one of the highest-grossing films of the year, Vegas had it all going on…
6. Pink–Sober…I was thinking So What was a bigger hit, but I was wrong…according to Billboard’s year-end Hot 100 chart, Sober was bigger or ranked higher…and it should…in fact, every Pink track I heard this year, I liked, except for Funhouse…her songwriting is as good as its ever been…let’s hope Adam Lambert can take Whataya Want From Me, a song Pink co-wrote, to the top…
7. Jay-Z featuring Alicia Keys–Empire State of Mind…only in a year that would see the New York Yankees back in the World Series (ps-they won!) Jay-Z would tell the tale of his hometown…I’m told Keys’ solo version is better, but I like this track…the hook is good and the chorus is perfect…it’s another one that might show up on next year’s list…
8. Britney Spears–Circus…I guess I should throw Brit-Brit a bone…LOL…even though she doesn’t sing, she had a more than decent comeback in ’09….Womanizer and 3 are also good jams…I’m excited to see how her ex, Kevin Federline, does on the new edition of Celebrity Fit Club…in short, Britney is still crazy, but the music shined just a tad brighter…
9. The Veronicas–Untouched…okay, this wasn’t a huge hit by any means, but I was instantly a fan after hearing this track on the worst day of the Ice Storm…well, the day when AT&T customers lost cell phone usage…oh, did that suck!…Lisa and Jessica are hella-talented!…and I thought Jessica played for my team, but I think it was all a misunderstanding…the arrangement on Untouched, so good!
10.  Kelly Clarkson–My Life Would Suck Without You…and don’t forget Already Gone…I actually prefer the latter…after a dismal album two years ago, Clarkson pulled it all back together and she put out her biggest album since her formative, post-Idol days…Clarkson also incorporated some mash-ups on her latest tour…Already Gone with what else?…Use Somebody…and since Already Gone and Beyonce’s Halo were written by the same person and let’s face it, they are almost identical tracks, Kelly tagged Already Gone with the Halo chorus one night…love her!
HONORABLE MENTIONS:
Oh, why the hell not?…first, the cast of GLEE…they make me want to listen to music again…these country acts didn’t quite make my chart, but I got nothing but respect…well, I suppose TAYLOR SWIFT was a big omission from my list, but I intended it that way…Zac Brown Band’s Chicken Fried charted highest on the Year End Hot 100 chart, not counting the many Taylor Swift tracks…I love Lady Antebellum…Run To You made the Year-End chart, but Need You Now is soooooo good and is a solid number one hit…Jordin Sparks continues to have a fairly healthy post-Idol career; I loved Battlefield…Jamie Foxx and T-Pain made me Blame It on the A-A-A-A-A-Alcohol…’Lil Wayne collaborated on two songs I liked…Kevin Rudolf’s Let it Rock and Jay Sean’s Down…3OH!3’s Don’t Trust Me????…funny as hell…and finally, like you had any doubts, I pay much respect and love to my little Glambert…I pray 2010 will be a good one for the almost-American Idol winner…and who knows?…he may get to meet the queen one day.
HAPPY 2010!

Too Gay, Huh?: The AMA Recap…

Take two!…I was blogging and I decided to insert a video of Carrie Underwood’s horrible performance of “Cowboy Casanova” and POOF!…I erased all of my post!…I’m very angry right now!…thus, I am going with a new plan…hit the highlights!…and yes, we’ll get to Adam Lambert, Lady GaGa, Whitney Houston, Rhianna, and Janet Jackson…in fact, we’ll start with Janet…the ABC promos included this line “8 minutes of Janet Jackson to open the show”…she clocked in at a little over 7…Jackson performed a medley of her biggest hits, slipping in her new single, “Make Me”…there was a lot of old school choreography, which was a thrill…I used to know the “I Miss You Much” routine…LOL!…Paula Abdul presented the first award, Best Pop/Rock Group, to the Black Eyed Peas, other awards in first hour: Best Country Band/Duo/Group-Rascal Flatts, Best Pop/Rock Female-Taylor Swift (absent from the ceremony and she constantly had the “I’m so shocked to win this award” look on her face), Alternative Rock Artist-Green Day… best performance of the hour?…Shakira! Ferosh!

The second hour began with Nicole Kidman and Kate Hudson-who lost her boobs in her dress-introducing their NINE co-star Fergie and the Black Eyed Peas…great performance!…although I was a bit scared when the speakers started dancing during “Boom Boom Pow”…yikes!…also, at the end of the performance, Will.I.Am proclaimed, “Six months No. 1, the new kings!”…?????…all righty then….Michael Jackson, posthumously, won 4 awards, all accepted by brother Jermaine…at one point, Jermaine and sons, Jerfar, Jermajesty, and Jeremy helped accept…get that?…Jackson won two awards that were televised…Best Soul/R&B Male and Best Pop/Rock Male…American Idol winner, Kris Allen was only there to present an award with tweener Demi Lovato…so sad…Rhianna’s performance was freaky and underwhelming…I swear, her outfit was left over from either Lady GaGa or the “Disturbia” video shoot…I guess when Chris Brown beat her abused her, he took the talent out of her too!…okay, since Carrie Underwood destroyed my original post, I will NOT be posting her train wreck of a performance of “Cowboy Casanova”…she was not meant to dance, I’ll just leave it at that…well, all mediocrity was erased by Lady GaGa:

TAKE THAT DICK CLARK!…right after GaGa, her husband, Perez Hilton, did a quick backstage filler…including the joke, “I ran into Derek Hough (DWTS) in the men’s room” (wink!)…oh that Perez!…Mary J. Blige killed it of course…then the biggest shock of the night, besides Adam Lambert, came when the winner of the T-Mobile Breakthrough Artist was announced…GaGa was up for it, but country upstart group, Gloriana won?!?…yes, I know Gloriana, I work at a country station, but WTF?…they started their speech by saying “I’m guessing you are wondering who Gloriana is?”…the one person I saw the camera flash to in the audience? Jai Rodriguez…LMAO!… next, the Jennifer Lopez performance of “Louboutins”…and yes, she fell on her ass…I won’t bore you with it, because it wasn’t much and really, she’s not much either…moving on…

Hour three started with Samuel L. Jackson presenting the International Artist of the Year award to, ahem, Whitney Houston…who then attempted to sing “Didn’t Know My Own Strength”…folks, she’s still sweaty and her vocal register is much lower than it used to be…I just don’t know…yes, you can blame drugs, but is seems her confidence is not what it used to be either…so sad…Alicia Keys got to perform solo, after her duet with Jay-Z earlier in the evening (“Empire State of Mind”)…and I didn’t like the solo song or performance…she’s another one who is not a fan of the dance…sitting at a piano?…yes…I had seen Seth Green in the audience several times and I wondered why?…he introduced Eminem and 50 Cent…Em didn’t win anything, but I’m sure he doesn’t care..he has an Oscar for God’s sake!…another underwhelming performance? Timbaland with Nelly Furtado and Say So (a new female protege)…it paid a slight tribute to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”…V star, Morena Baccarin and FlashForward star, Dominic Monaghan introduced Green Day…I like “21 Guns”…however, when you look at the landscape of pop music today, Green Day sort of looks out of place, not to mention Kings of Leon, who were nominated for multiple awards, including Artist of the Year…well, after Jay-Z took the Rap/Hip-Hop Male award…Ryan Seacrest presented the Artist of the Year award to Taylor Swift in London…again, I’m sick of her “shocked” face!…well, Taylor should have reserved her shocked expression for what happened next, Adam Lambert!…Rolling Stone did a follow up story on Lambert’s crazy, sex-fueled performance of “For Your Entertainment”…apparently, ABC pulled the simulated oral sex move with the guy, you know, Glambert shoved the guy’s face into his crotch?…from the West coast broadcast…but they didn’t remove the moment when Lambert grabbed his “straight” keyboard player for a deep throat session…here’s one quote from Lambert from the Rolling Stone blurb:
“Adrenaline is crazy and sometimes things just happen,” said Lambert after the show. “We had this great dance number totally staged. It’s a sexy song about seduction and power and I was just doing the lyrics justice. My intention was not to try and create a controversy. But if a controversy ensues, then so be it.”

I think we will end on that note….oh yeah, buy Adam Lambert’s For Your Entertainment and Lady GaGa’s The Fame Monster today or sometime this week!…I’ll be buying my copies Tuesday!…I’m pumped!

Later!
